Once the initial feelings of euphoria surrounding your engagement are over we know that these feelings can quickly turn to sheer panic on how on earth to start planning your wedding! So, after chatting with lots of different couples that have already been there and done that, we’ve come up with this (hopefully very handy) month by month guide with suggestions on what to do when. Happy planning!…

12 months to go…

  • Decide on your budget and establish roughly how many guests you will invite
  • Decide on a time frame for your wedding date, narrow it down to a few weekends
  • View reception venues and book one as soon as you find one you love
  • Don’t forget to make sure that your date is also available with the church minister or civil ceremony registrar too!
  • Decide on your bridal party: bridesmaids, ushers, best man etc.

11 months to go…

  • Start dress shopping!
  • Send save-the-date cards to your guests
  • Book your photographer and videographer

10 months to go…

  • Make a final decision on your dress
  • Book a caterer, DJ and/or band if required
  • Start researching your honeymoon

9 months to go…

  • Buy your bridesmaid’s dresses and suits for the groom, best man and ushers
  • Find a florist and set a meeting to chat through your ideas on flowers
  • Go for a menu tasting with your caterer and also decide on drinks

8 months to go…

  • Make decisions on music and readings for your ceremony and check that the church or venue doesn’t impose any restrictions on these
  • Make decisions on invitations, place names and menu cards and place orders if necessary

7 months to go…

  • Start thinking about how you are going to personalize your wedding with table names, wedding favours and seating charts
  • Book your wedding transport
  • Order your wedding cake (don’t forget you can have tastings for this too!)

6 months to go…

  • Choose gifts for the wedding party (usually the bridesmaids, best man and the mums!)
  • Pick and order your wedding rings
  • Confirm the order of service with your priest or registrar and have them printed up

5 months to go…

  • Buy your wedding shoes and accessories
  • Decide on a hairdresser and makeup artist and book your trial appointments

4 months to go…

  • If you’re changing your name, renew your passport now or you can always wait and do it after your honeymoon
  • Make sure your hen and stag do’s are being planned!
  • Go honeymoon clothes shopping

3 months to go…

  • Have your wedding dress altered
  • If you’re having a gift list, now is the time to start writing your wish list!

2 months to go…

  • Send out invitations (traditionally sent 6-12 weeks before the day) and keep a list of acceptances
  • You might need to organise a rehearsal for a few days before the big day so decide on a date and inform those who will need to be there

1 month to go…

  • Arrange a final fitting of your wedding dress and remember to take with you any special underwear, shoes and accessories
  • Reconfirm arrangements with all of your suppliers
  • Chase up any guests who haven’t responded to your invitation
  • Confirm your final numbers with the caterers and venue and create your final seating plan
  • Order your honeymoon currency
  • Have your final haircut and colour

1 week to go…

  • Have the wedding rehearsal
  • Pack for your honeymoon
  • Wear-in your wedding shoes
  • Have your final beauty treatments
  • Find your ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’
  • Create a list of all of your wedding suppliers, their contact details and the times they’re meant to arrive on the day and then pass this over to someone in your bridal party so that they have it if the need arises!

1 day to go

  • Try to relax, don’t work and have fun!
